Ruben gets jump on Danny in chess final
JAKARTA (JP): Grand Master (GM) Ruben Gunawan beat International Master (IM) Danny Juswanto in the 54th move using the Nimzo Hindia defense in the first match of the finals of the 34th Chess Olympic Games national selection tournament here on Wednesday.
"Danny was facing a time crisis and did not notice when I moved my rook to d8 and threatened his queen. That was my key to victory," Ruben was quoted as saying by Indonesian Chess Association spokesman Kristianus Liem.
Their second match on Thursday will decide the winner of the tournament.
Ruben and Danny, along with GM Edhi Handoko and FIDE Master Hamdani Rudin, will join GM Utut Adianto and IM Cerdas Barus on the Olympic team. The Chess Olympics will be held in Istanbul from Oct. 28 to Nov. 14. (ivy)
