A dialysis patient named Ediyanto Wong (63) reportedly experienced complications during a medical procedure, resulting in a guidewire being left in his heart. The Supervisory Board (Dewas) of RSUD Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie (AWS), Samarinda, has issued a statement regarding the incident.

The Chairman of the RSUD AWS Supervisory Board, Dr Syahrir A Pasinringi, stated that the catheterisation lab procedure was handled by cardiovascular specialist Dr Muhammad Forqon. The patient was undergoing dialysis when he suffered a heart attack, having previously undergone coronary stent placement in Singapore.

“The patient is indeed from Singapore and had previously had a ring placed there. He was undergoing dialysis,” said Dr Syahrir after attending a meeting at the East Kalimantan Regional House of Representatives (DPRD Kaltim) on Tuesday.

According to Dr Syahrir, the patient happened to be undergoing dialysis at RSUD AWS when the emergency occurred. Ediyanto’s family subsequently requested the assistance of cardiologist Dr Furqon to manage the patient’s condition.

“He happened to be at the hospital for dialysis when he suffered a heart attack. While undergoing dialysis, he had a heart attack,” he added.

“The family requested help, pleading for Dr Furqon to assist,” Syahrir continued.

Syahrir noted that the patient’s condition was an emergency. In such situations, he explained, medical actions are performed with the primary consideration of saving the patient’s life.

“Because this was an emergency situation. In an emergency, we sometimes do not strictly follow standard operating procedures (SOP). Why? Because it is about saving a life. In an emergency, the priority is how we save the person,” he explained.

Regarding the guidewire reported to have been left in the patient’s heart, Dr Syahrir stated that, based on Dr Furqon’s explanation, the guidewire was intentionally left as part of the procedure to save the patient’s life.

“That is the point; according to Dr Furqon, it was one of the measures taken to save the patient’s life,” he concluded.
