RSCM: Student Poisoned by Free Nutritious Meal Program in Karo Currently Has Good Memory
Dr Cipto Mangunkundusumo Hospital (RSCM) has addressed allegations regarding memory loss experienced by Febiona Purba, a student who was a victim of food poisoning involving the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme in Karo Regency, North Sumatra. RSCM revealed that Febiona’s memory is currently in good condition.
“Yes, I will address the issue regarding memory loss. What is clear is that during my examination, her memory is very good, both short-term and long-term. Furthermore, the electroencephalography examination showed no abnormalities. That is all I can say,” stated Dr Setyo Handryastuti during a press conference at RSCM, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (16/09/2026).
Another doctor treating Febiona, Dr Tjhin Wiguna, stated that Febiona can remember previous events well and is able to describe what happened.
“In our initial clinical investigation, she can recount events well. Although there are some instances she has forgotten, overall she can certainly describe what she felt,” said Tjhin.
Tjhin added that Febiona possesses good cognitive function and does not have memory problems.
“So, I can conclude that currently, she possesses sufficient cognitive function and orientation. She knows where she is, the date, the day, and who people are; she knows everything. Therefore, I do not see any disorientation or issues with her working memory. Overall, it appears to be quite good at this stage,” he added.
Previously, two victims of the MBG food poisoning in Karo Regency, Agnesia Paruliana Silitonga and Febiona Purba, were transported to Jakarta. Both received medical treatment at RSCM Jakarta.
“The patients have been received and are receiving treatment from the RSCM medical team,” said RSCM Jakarta Public Relations officer, Sylvia, when contacted on Sunday (13/09).
Agnesia Paruliana Silitonga and Febiona Purba were brought to Jakarta following a request from Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as revealed by the Governor of North Sumatra, Bobby Nasution.
“In terms of medical handling, the doctors who brought them to Jakarta mentioned that our medical team in Medan is highly capable. However, the Vice President requested direct handling and monitoring. Therefore, for the children who showed higher medical indications and trauma than their peers, the Vice President requested they be brought directly to Jakarta,” said Governor Bobby.
