The condition of the RPH Kaliunda in Klungkung Regency, Bali, is concerning. Amid renovation efforts, the Klungkung Agriculture Department (Distan) is considering relocation. The current site is deemed more strategic for supporting Kaliunda tourism, despite the aging structure.

Klungkung Agriculture Department Head Ida Bagus Gde Juanida stated that RPH Kaliunda is the only cattle slaughterhouse in the regency, with construction dating back to the 1980s. ‘This is the only one we have in Klungkung Regency. The building was last constructed around 1987 or 1989,’ Juanida said during an interview at RPH Kaliunda on May 28, 2026.

Cattle slaughtering at the facility is limited to one cow per day on average, but it still provides regular, albeit modest, revenue through levies. ‘We receive levies from here. It’s not much, but it’s consistent,’ he added.

Juanida explained that relocation is now a priority due to growing residential density around the site, leading to complaints about waste. ‘Previously, the area was sparsely populated, but now it’s increasingly crowded, causing complaints about slaughter waste. That’s why we’re planning to relocate. However, there’s no suitable land available yet, and costs are a factor,’ he said.

Regent I Made Satria also noted the deteriorating roof and building condition but stressed the regency’s fiscal constraints. ‘I’ve seen many damaged roofs and the building needs repairs. However, our fiscal situation doesn’t allow for repairs. We’re even borrowing funds for higher-priority road infrastructure projects,’ Satria said. ‘But we will definitely consider RPH repairs in the future; currently, we’re prioritising urgent projects.’

The facility has two slaughter areas: an old thatched-roof building in poor condition and a larger permanent structure with a damaged ceiling and cracked tiles. Its location beside the Kaliunda tourist area is seen as detracting from the scenic views, while surrounding residential areas have become densely populated.
