Rp930 Trillion Available! Bank Funds Remain Secure Despite Involvement in Government Projects

Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Destry Damumnay has ensured that liquidity within the Indonesian economic system will not run dry, even as the banking sector is currently actively involved in various government projects.

Destry stated that in supporting projects such as the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme and the Merah Putih Village Cooperative (KDMP), the government has conducted its own calculations to ensure bank liquidity remains secure, even when banks, particularly the State-Owned Bank Association (Himbara), are requested to participate actively.

“So, they certainly have their own calculations,” said Destry when met in the Hotel Kempinski area, Jakarta, on Thursday (3/9/2026).

She further assured that Bank Indonesia will not remain idle if banking liquidity is heavily absorbed by these programmes. According to her, BI is also preparing liquidity buffers for the banking sector through monetary operation instruments.

“The important thing is that Bank Indonesia is also preparing liquidity in the form of repos; I did not have the chance to display it earlier. But if we look at repos, including FX swaps, where foreign funds enter and are converted into Rupiah, it has reached approximately 920 to 930 trillion,” she said.

According to Destry, this figure reflects liquidity being re-channelled into the domestic financial system. She emphasised that maintaining liquidity availability is a shared responsibility between the government and Bank Indonesia, even though both operate through different channels.

“This means that liquidity is returning to the system. Therefore, maintaining liquidity is indeed our shared task; even if the government enters through Third-Party Funds (DPK), for us, it becomes a liquidity tool,” she added.
