The ambitious construction of the Kampung Nelayan Modern (Modern Fishing Village), also known as Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP), in Bintaro subdistrict, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), is showing significant progress. As of this week, physical construction has reached 10.98 per cent, with the project targeted for full completion by May 2026.

The project, funded by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) to the tune of Rp11 billion, has undergone design adjustments during the process. Fieldwork is currently focused on substructure, foundations, and site preparation.

The facilities under construction encompass basic infrastructure such as local roads, drainage systems, sanitation facilities including septic tanks, and perimeter fencing. Beyond this, the zone will be equipped with vital economic facilities including cold storage, an ice factory, supply kiosks, a fishing workshop, and a hygienic fish market.

The KNMP Bintaro project carries the concept of an integrated zone designed to boost the welfare of local fishermen. Officials have expressed optimism that the project will be completed on schedule, noting that the structures involved are not complex multi-storey buildings.

The hygienic fish market is envisaged as a “supermarket”-style facility, whilst the beachfront area will be arranged to accommodate seafood culinary stalls. Visitors will be able to select their preferred fish, have it cooked to order on site, and enjoy it whilst taking in the coastal scenery.

The integrated fish market concept is expected to become a distinctive attraction and drawcard for tourists. The construction of the hygienic fish market component will fall under the responsibility of the Mataram City Government.

The project forms part of the national Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih programme, a strategic national initiative under President Prabowo’s administration aimed at improving the livelihoods and competitiveness of coastal communities across Indonesia.
