MANILA (Reuter): The Philippines, calling itself a "very
humane, kinder society", said yesterday it would no longer
forcibly repatriate Vietnamese boat people.
And it would find ways to normalize the stay of those who
refused to return to Vietnam.
Foreign Secretary Domingo Siazon said one of 84 migrants
repatriated to Vietnam on Wednesday was put on the plane because
of a "mixup" but the man, on orders from Manila, would be brought
back to the Philippines.
"There was a mistake... We are bringing him back," Siazon told
Manila-based foreign correspondents. "It may not happen in your
society but it does in ours."
