RP will list illegal workers

MANILA (AFP): Philippine President Fidel Ramos said yesterday
that following the controversial hanging of a Filipina maid in
Singapore, the government is to check on the status of 1.79
million Filipinos working illegally abroad.

"I take serious notice of the fact that a large number of
migrant Filipino workers are not documented officially, which
makes them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse," Ramos said.

He also said the government will review its policies on
overseas worker deployment as he expressed concern about the
growing number of women among the country's army of estimated
4.26 million workers abroad.

"The effect on families, homes and children left by working
mothers going overseas surely requires thorough attention and
effective action," he said.
