MANILA (AFP): Philippine Vice President Teofisto Guingona said on Thursday the Myanmar government politely rebuffed his attempts to meet detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon last weekend.
Guingona said in a briefing to foreign diplomats that he cited the Philippines' role in sponsoring Myanmar's membership of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) but still met with no success.
Asked if he was satisfied with the explanation, Guingona said: "I'm satisfied. I want to give them time."
Guingona received activists opposed to the Myanmar rulers in April and the group urged him to seek a meeting with the Nobel laureate, who is under house arrest. Guingona flew to Myanmar last weekend for an ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting.
