RP unemployment rate surges

MANILA (AFP): Unemployment in the Philippines rose to 9.6
percent in October 1998 to three million people compared to 7.9
percent in the same period last year, the National Statistics
Office said here Tuesday.

This marked an improvement over the 13.3 percent unemployment
rate in April 1998, the statistics also revealed.

The office said the labor force in October 1998 had grown by
3.3 percent or by more than one million people over the labor
force in October 1997.
