RP to evacuate workers from Yemen

MANILA (Reuter): The Philippines is sending a C-130 air force plane to Yemen to evacuate about 1,000 Filipino workers stranded in the strife-torn country, the foreign office said yesterday.

It said the aircraft would leave Manila as soon as landing and overflight permits had been secured from Yemeni authorities.

There are about 1,400 Filipinos in Yemen, working mostly in hotels, government hospitals and for multinational companies. About 1,000 of them have asked to leave, officials said.
