RP ship leaks oil but no damage
MANILA (Reuter): A Philippine Navy ship with a cracked hull leaked oil off southern Palawan island but the spillage was minor and caused no damage to mangrove forests, the Navy said yesterday.
It denied reports by an official of the Presidential Committee on Oil Spill Prevention that the vessel had generated an oil slick two kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide in Ulugan Bay, Palawan.
Navy anti-oil pollution experts saw only a thin film of oil in three small areas which dissipated on Saturday a day after the spillage, a Navy statement said.
Ulugan Bay is the site of a mangrove reforestation program which cost over 100 million pesos (US$3.8 million) to build and maintain. It is also a major fishing ground.
