RP ready to fire strikers
MANILA (AFP): The general manager of the Philippines' only
overhead railway system said here yesterday the railway was ready
to fire some 800 striking workers and hire replacements.
Geraldine Carlin's announcement that the strikers would be
fired comes after they defied a government order to return to
work by June 11. However, she could not say when the light rail
transit (LRT) service would return to normal.
The LRT, which serves Manila, normally runs from 5:30 a.m. to
9:00 p.m. daily, but has been reduced to operating from 6:00 a.m.
to 10 a.m. and 4:00 p. m. to 8:00 p.m., due to the strike.
Carlin also admitted that the strikers had barricaded some of
the LRT stations. The 800 LRT employees went on strike June 9 to
push for higher wages. However the management managed to restore
some operations later that same day.
