RP President arrives in Laos

VIENTIANE (AFP): President Fidel Ramos arrived in Vientiane
yesterday for the first ever visit by a Philippine head of state.

Ramos' two day visit is intended to boost bilateral ties and
help kick start economic relations between the two which are
currently minuscule.

He is also the first president from a member of the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations to visit since Laos was
admitted to the regional grouping in July.

He went directly from Wattay International Airport to Ho Kham
presidential palace where he was officially welcomed by his
Laotian counterpart Nouhak Phoumsavanh. Later in the day Ramos
will meet with Lao Prime Minister Khamtay Siphandone.
