RP overseas labors to hit one million

MANILA: The Philippines government hopes to deploy at least one million overseas workers in 2005 as companies abroad continue to prefer Filipinos, an official said on Friday.

Labor Secretary Patricia Santo Tomas said that for 2004, a total of 933,588 workers were able to gain employment overseas, up from 867,969 in 2003.

Santo Tomas said her department would intensify efforts to find safe overseas jobs for Filipinos who could not find employment in the country due to a slumping economy. -- DPA
