MANILA (AFP): Philippine leftist leader Filemon Lagman, a former communist guerrilla leader, was in critical condition after being ambushed on Tuesday by unidentified gunmen at a university compound in northern Manila, aides said.
Lagman, popularly known as "Ka (Comrade) Popoy", became a union leader and head of the leftist group Sanlakas after a breakaway communist guerrilla faction which he headed signed a peace agreement with the government.
Other details of the attack were not immediately available, but his colleagues said he has received "threats to his life" from unidentified persons.
