RP embassy probes Japan recruiters
TOKYO (Reuter): The Philippine Embassy in Tokyo has conducted
its own investigation into suspected unlawful activities by
Japanese employers of Filipino entertainers, a newspaper reported
yesterday.
The Yomiuri Shimbun said it was the first time a foreign
embassy in Japan had conducted criminal investigations and raised
the question of sovereignty.
The daily said the embassy's Labor Department conducted the
investigations into companies employing Filipino entertainers. In
some cases, the embassy fined recruiters found to have violated
contracts and deported some entertainers, it said.
Philippine Ambassador Domingo Siazon told the newspaper
embassy officials were acting under instructions from the
Philippine Labor Department and that they did not violate any
Japanese law.
