RP continues Marcos suits

MANILA (AP): The government of President Joseph Estrada will
not settle the numerous criminal and civil suits against the
family of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos for less than 75
percent of his US$540 million Swiss bank deposits, a senior
official said yesterday.

Presidential Executive Secretary Ronaldo Zamora said the
Marcos family has expressed privately that "they are amicable to
a settlement."

On Thursday, Zamora indicated that the Estrada administration
was more inclined to favor an out-of-court settlement with the
Marcoses and their associates because years of legal battles to
recover their alleged ill-gotten wealth have yielded little.

The Marcos Swiss accounts have been transferred to a
Philippine bank. The money is to be released to the Philippine
government if it wins a conviction against Marcos' widow, Imelda.
