RP cellphone market to hit 30m this year

MANILA: The number of mobile telephones in the Philippines is
expected to hit 30 million by the end of this year, Alcatel
president Philippe Germond said Tuesday.

Germond, head of the French telecoms giant, said the
Philippine market could become one of the major contributors to
his company's growth in the Asia-Pacific region, adding that
Alcatel would double its business in the region in the next three
years.

Industry leaders estimate that there are about 25 million
cellphones in use in the Philippines currently. -- AFP
