MANILA (Reuter): The Philippine and Malaysian police have agreed to conduct joint security operations on their common sea border to curb piracy and drug trafficking, Philippine police said yesterday.
The agreement was signed at the weekend when police chiefs from the two countries met their southeast Asian counterparts in a police security meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
"Under the agreement, Philippine and Malaysian police forces shall conduct aggressive police operations against transnational criminal syndicates operating within the Eastern Malaysia and the Sulu-Tawi-Tawi region (in the Philippines)," the police said in a statement.
