TANJUNG ENIM, South Sumatra: The fire which ravaged dozens of houses in the South Sumatran town of Tanjung Enim on Friday is estimated to have caused Rp 8 billion in material losses, Antara reported Monday.

The chief of the Lahat police precinct, Lt. Col. Judy AR, said 32 shop-houses, three food warehouses and two motorcycles were damaged by the fire.

Sources said that when the fire broke out, some of the owners of the shop-houses were celebrating Christmas out of town.

At least 200 people lost their homes in Friday's fire. Judy quoted witnesses as saying that the fire originated in an electronics shop which doubled as a games center.
