Rp 500 Billion Electrically-Based Irrigation Project in Indramayu
PT Hutama Karya (Persero) has completed the LMS-02 irrigation modernisation project in Indramayu Regency with an integrated electrically-based irrigation system valued at an investment of Rp 582 billion. The infrastructure is now ready to irrigate 16,308 hectares of agricultural land and is already benefiting farmers through increased planting frequency and assured water supply. The project, named ICB Package LMS-02: Utara Main Canal Upgrading Works For Rentang Irrigation Modernisation Project, focused on the rehabilitation and capacity enhancement of the main canal spanning 30.16 kilometres. All construction work was declared complete as of 29 April 2025. This project forms part of the strategic programme of the Ministry of Public Works (PU) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan). Unlike conventional irrigation systems, this project implements modernisation through the use of electric water gates and telemetry technology. The construction work included the building of 20 off-take structures, 9 diversion off-takes, 14 generator houses, and 17 telemetry units. After one year of operation, the project is said to have a significant impact on farmers, with planting frequency increasing from once to twice a year. Additionally, the more robust structural system is able to reduce water loss rates, allowing water discharge to be retained more optimally, including during drying periods. Irrigation modernisation also encompasses the construction of inspection roads that support farmer mobility, particularly during peak harvest seasons. This condition is assessed as helping to lower logistics costs as well as enhance the community’s economy and land values in the surrounding irrigation area. Acting Executive Vice President (EVP) Secretary of Hutama Karya, Hamdani, stated that the LMS-02 project plays a crucial role as the main primary canal before water is distributed to secondary and tertiary channels. “While LSS focuses on secondary channels and drains, LMS-02 is the heart of the primary canal that carries the main water to be divided into secondary and tertiary plots,” he said.
