Rp 44m taken in armed robbery in Kelapa Gading

JAKARTA (JP): North Jakarta Police detectives are still seeking two armed men robbers shot a 54-year-old man during a robbery at midday on Monday at Kelapa Gading.

According to police chief Lt. Col. Wisnu Amat Sastro, his men are still in the dark about the identities of the two criminals, who were reportedly armed with a revolver and rode a Yamaha RX King motorcycle.

"We have no leads so far about them or their motorcycle," officer Wisnu said.

The victim, identified as Jengki Bambang, was shot in the back while attempting to hold on to a bag containing Rp 44 million (US$5,500) in cash on Jl. Raya Kelapa Gading Indah.

Doctors at Ongko Mulyo Hospital on Jl. Pulomas Barat, where he is being treated, said Jengki regained consciousness on Tuesday morning.

According to Eko, from the hospital's emergency room, a bullet was "successfully removed" from Jengki's back in an operation on Monday evening.

"The wound has been cleaned thoroughly. The patient has been shifted to the hospital's Flamboyan ward for further treatment," Eko said.

Martha, a nurse in that ward, said the patient is still under observation.

"So far, he is doing fine," she said. "He, for example, has started eating. He still can't walk though, with so many tubes attached to him," she added.

According to a police report, the robbers saw the victim exiting a Jaya Bank branch, near where the crime took place, with a bag in his hands.

The robbers bumped Jengki with their motorcycle, and attempted to grab the bag.

When Jengki tried to fight back and would not let go of the bag, one of the robbers fired a gun, and they then fled with the bag. (ylt)
