Rp 244 Trillion Spent, Results Visible Only After 9 Months
Meta has spent US$14.3 billion, or Rp 244 trillion, on developing AI within the company. The result is its first major AI model named Avocado, originating from the Muse series. “Over the past nine months, Meta Superintelligence Labs has rebuilt our AI stack from the ground up, moving faster than any development cycle we’ve ever run before,” said Meta, quoted from CNBC Indonesia on Thursday (9/4/2026). Meta added that the initial models were designed to be small and fast, yet capable of reasoning on complex questions. “This is a strong foundation, and the next generation is being developed,” the company further stated. The Muse Spark series is not positioned as a top-tier model. However, Meta highlights its advantages in efficiency and competitive performance for various tasks. The Rp 244 trillion is part of the investment in the startup ScaleAI, owned by Alexandr Wang. The 29-year-old then joined Meta’s Superintelligence Labs unit that created Avocado. Meta is indeed highly ambitious in developing its own AI amid fierce competition with other companies like Anthropic and Google. Unfortunately, the company’s open-source model was disappointing upon its launch in April. CNBC International reported that the disappointing launch attracted developers. This is also what prompted Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to change the company’s AI strategy.
