Rp 15,000 and more for street rallies
JAKARTA: It seems that anyone can capitalize from campaigning these days; a small investment can mean regular income.
An ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver in Palmerah, West Jakarta, has bought some green and yellow bandanas, which he carries every day.
"I need only wait near spots where I know street rallies will start. I whip out the appropriate-colored bandana. Whoever is organizing the rally will then give me money, T-shirts and sometimes snacks and cigarettes," he said.
How much does he usually get for riding for hours on the streets, yelling and waving parties' finger signs or flags?
"The PPP (United Development Party) usually gives Rp 15,000 (US$6.25) and a T-shirt, while Golkar, besides the money, gives us a snack," Ridwan said.
Does the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) give him money?
"No. They don't have money," he said. (05/swe)
