A number of parking lots have increased their fees prior to
the Jakarta administration's plan to increase parking fees to Rp
1,000 to boost revenues.

On Dec. 17, 1996 in the Landmark parking area I was forced to
pay Rp 1,000 for less than 45 minutes parking. On Nov. 30, 1996
on-street parking in the Pasar Baru area nearly cost me Rp 1,000;
since the self-appointed attendant could not produce any ticket I
gave him Rp 300 for 10 minutes parking. On Dec. 18, 1996 in
Glodok Plaza they demanded Rp 1,000 for half an hour's parking; I
refused to pay that amount and settled for less.

If the Jakarta administration expects to increase its income
by raising the official parking fee, it will experience
difficulties, as vehicle owners will be reluctant to pay the
increased fee. On-street parking, though without tickets, will be
preferred.

I appeal to the parking authorities to review their decision
to increase fees.
