Rp 10.2 Trillion Investment: Indonesia's First Melamine Factory to be Built in Gresik SEZ
The government has begun construction of Indonesia’s first melamine factory. The project is located in the Gresik Special Economic Zone, East Java.
The investment value of this project reaches around US$600 million or the equivalent of Rp 10.2 trillion at an exchange rate of Rp 17,000 per US dollar.
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto described this project as an important step in strengthening industrial downstreaming. The project also increases the added value of natural resources.
“We gather here today to witness an important milestone in Indonesia’s industrial journey, namely the groundbreaking of the first and largest melamine factory in Indonesia,” said Airlangga at the groundbreaking event in Gresik, East Java, on Wednesday (8/4/2026).
This zone continues to attract investor interest. Until the end of 2025, the cumulative total investment in all national SEZs reached around US$19.7 billion.
The Gresik SEZ contributed around US$6.1 billion or equivalent to 31 percent of that total.
Airlangga assessed that this achievement is supported by national economic stability. Indonesia’s economy grew by 5.11 percent in 2025.
The growth was supported by strong domestic consumption, increased investment, and solid export performance.
Investment realisation in the fourth quarter of 2025 also increased. Its value reached US$29.2 billion or grew 9.7 percent year-on-year.
The Gresik SEZ has become a priority zone in promoting downstreaming and exports. This zone also provides a significant contribution to the regional economy, especially the manufacturing sector.
The manufacturing sector contributes around 31.32 percent to East Java’s economy. The contribution in Gresik Regency reaches 52.58 percent of the Regional Gross Domestic Product.
The Human Development Index increased from 76.98 in 2021 to 79.69 in 2025.
