Roy Suryo and Tifa Not Detained, Jokowi Says It's the Prosecutor's Authority

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has stated that the decision not to detain Roy Suryo and Tifa, suspects in the case of alleged fake diploma accusations against him, is entirely the authority of the prosecutor’s office. “That is the full authority of the prosecutor’s office. We must respect that,” Jokowi said in Sumber, Banjarsari, Solo, on Tuesday (23/6).

Previously, the Head of the South Jakarta District Prosecutor’s Office, Marcelo Bellah, explained the reason prosecutors did not detain the two suspects after the case file was handed over. Marcelo stated that the families of both suspects had agreed to act as guarantors to ensure they would not flee and would attend the trial proceedings. “Therefore, in accordance with the applicable mechanisms and provisions, the suspects were not detained,” Marcelo said on Monday (22/6).

Jokowi said he would simply follow the ongoing legal process and wait for the case to proceed to trial. “The most important thing is that we follow the existing legal process until the trial,” he concluded.
