Roy Suryo and Others to Face Trial; Legal Counsel Hopes for Jokowi's Reputation to be Restored

Legal counsel for the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, has spoken out regarding the upcoming trial of Roy Suryo and Tifauziah Tyassuma, also known as Dokter Tifa, after the case files concerning allegations of a fake diploma were declared complete (P-21) by the Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office.

“With the P-21 status, the case will proceed to trial shortly, providing certainty regarding Mr Jokowi’s diploma, which has been narrated as fake. In reality, Mr Jokowi obtained it legally from UGM after successfully completing his studies,” said one of Jokowi’s legal counsel, Rivai Kusumanegara, when confirmed on Wednesday (3/6).

Through this trial, Rivai stated that Jokowi’s reputation could be restored after being accused of using a forged diploma. “The goal is to restore the good name of Mr Jokowi, as well as several institutions that have been dragged into this, such as UGM, KPU, KPUD, Kemendikti, and others,” he added.

Furthermore, Rivai noted that the trial would serve as a legal forum to present the actual facts, as he believes the public has been presented with falsehoods and hoaxes. “Through this trial, the public can follow the evidentiary process by hearing balanced arguments. Certainly, many lessons will be learned regarding democratic life, law enforcement, and civilised political conduct,” he said.

Previously, the Metro Jaya Regional Police stated that the case files for Roy Suryo and Tifauziah Tyassuma regarding the allegations of President Joko Widodo’s fake diploma have been declared complete (P-21) by the Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office.

“Alhamdulillah, as of today, the prosecutors have stated that the case files we submitted to the Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office no longer require any further fulfilment of the deficiencies that were previously addressed,” said the Director of General Criminal Investigation of Metro Jaya Police, Kombes Iman Imanuddin, at the Metro Jaya Police Headquarters on Tuesday (2/6).

Iman stated that the police will conduct the second stage of handover (Phase II) to the prosecutor’s office in the near future, though he could not confirm the exact timing. Following the Phase II handover, prosecutors will draft the indictment, which will lead to the trial process. “We are currently coordinating the handover of evidence and the suspects,” said Iman.
