Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Head of Projects for the International Cooperation Directorate of Rossiya Segodnya Media Group, Sofia Zagorskaya, believes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly integrated into journalistic work.

She made this statement following the opening of the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest exhibition at the ANTARA Heritage Center, Jakarta, on Monday, in response to questions regarding AI in journalism, particularly in photo production.

“At the Sputnik news agency, we have already implemented AI technology to produce podcasts; we even have digital announcers and use AI avatars for that purpose. Therefore, in my view, the entry of technology into our professional work is an inevitable process,” said Zaglyorskaya.

However, Zagorskaya emphasised that AI will not be able to replace the creative potential of journalists or the responsibility for the content published in journalism.

“One thing we must not forget is that the creative potential of a professional journalist can never be replaced. Furthermore, it is the journalists themselves who are responsible for the content they present to the audience,” said Zagorskaya.

“So, you cannot simply hand all of this over to AI. You must think for yourself. That is what we do at Sputnik when producing our content,” she added.

Additionally, Zagorskaya also praised the work of Indonesian photographers, particularly this year, as they highlighted important issues such as social, environmental, and cultural matters, which are also major concerns for other countries in the world.

According to her, these photographic works serve as an excellent example of how journalists should address urgent issues and not be afraid to discuss them, especially through visual works.

“In this way, the contribution of Indonesian photographers is very important, even for those of us not involved in the world of photography, because their work reminds us of how vulnerable our society and nature are,” Zagorskaya explained.

The ANTARA Heritage Center is hosting the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest 2025 exhibition from 21–27 September 2026, where the works of three Indonesian photographers are also being displayed.

The three Indonesian photographers who won the 2025 Andrei Stenin international photo contest are Reza Saifullah, first place in the “Top News” category; Garry Lotulung, Jury Honourable Mention in the “Top News” category; and Hendy Wicaksono, third place in the “My Planet” category.
