Rosatom Meets Prabowo, Offers Peaceful Nuclear Energy Cooperation in Indonesia

Moscow (ANTARA) - The Chief Executive Officer of Rosatom, Russia’s state-owned nuclear company, met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/5) to discuss opportunities for cooperation in utilising nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

“On Tuesday (12/5), Alexey Likhachev, Director General of the Rosatom State Corporation, during a working visit to the Republic of Indonesia, held a meeting with the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. The parties discussed the potential for Russia-Indonesia cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including the development of nuclear power plant (NPP) projects, nuclear infrastructure, personnel training, and non-energy applications of nuclear technology,” Rosatom stated in its announcement.

The nuclear company also expressed its readiness to offer Indonesia a comprehensive approach to developing the national nuclear programme, ranging from large-scale NPP development to projects involving small modular reactors and floating power plant installations.

“We are ready to offer Indonesia maximum localisation of technology processes at the NPP construction stage through to the maintenance stage,” Likhachev said after meeting President Prabowo.

Floating NPPs, he added, can be built taking into account Indonesia’s long coastline and islands in its archipelago region.

Likhachev further noted that Indonesia already has research nuclear reactors and expertise in nuclear medicine, with many young professionals in the nuclear field who have studied in Russia.

Indonesia also plans to develop nuclear power capacity to reach 500 megawatts in the early 2030s, then 7-8 gigawatts in the 2040s, and 35-37 gigawatts in the 2060s, he said.

“That means we cannot do it without the help of large power plants with capacities of 1,000 megawatts and 1,200 megawatts. We (Rosatom) know how to build them in different climates and regulatory systems,” Likhachev stated.

The company is implementing three projects in Russia and 39 projects abroad, such as the Rooppur NPP in Bangladesh, El Dabaa NPP in Egypt, Paks II NPP in Hungary, Kudankulam NPP in India, Akkuyu NPP in Turkey, and two projects in China.

Floating NPPs are mobile energy generators placed on a ship or floating platform to assist in providing electricity to remote and hard-to-reach areas.
