Rosan Roeslani Reviews PT Vale Morowali Project, Emphasises Sustainable Downstream Processing

Investment and Downstreaming Minister and CEO of Danantara Indonesia, Rosan P. Roeslani, has emphasised the importance of maintaining a balance between industrial development and environmental conservation. He made the statement whilst inspecting PT Vale Indonesia Tbk’s Indonesia Growth Project (IGP) Morowali on Wednesday (22/7/2026). The visit took place after he attended a ceremony marking the arrival of an autoclave, the main equipment for the High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) project, at the Sambalagi plant area in Bungku Pesisir District, Morowali Regency. Accompanied by Danantara officials, Rosan reviewed several project facilities, including a nursery that is part of the post-mining land rehabilitation and reclamation programme. PT Vale Indonesia CEO Bernardus Irmanto outlined the various environmental management efforts implemented by the company, ranging from plant propagation and land reclamation to sediment pond management and other conservation programmes, as part of the application of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Rosan appreciated this commitment and assessed that sustainability must be an inseparable part of the national downstreaming agenda. ‘What I pay most attention to is how the sustainability aspect, which maintains a balance between the environment and social factors, is highly regarded here. We see nursery facilities and the implementation of best mining practices with international standards,’ Rosan said. ‘Incoming investment must provide sustainable benefits, not only for the company but also for the region and the community,’ he stated. In addition to visiting the nursery, the delegation also inspected the jetty and viewed PT Vale’s mining activities from the air. From that vantage point, Rosan observed mining practices that are claimed to prioritise environmental management alongside production activities. Separately, PT Vale Indonesia’s President Commissioner, Fauzambi Syahrul Multhazar, stated that the Morowali project has been meticulously prepared and aligns with the government’s downstreaming policy. ‘This project has been well prepared, well planned, and will be well executed. Morowali, in my view, is a good pilot project,’ he said. PT Vale noted that the development of the Morowali project is not only oriented towards increasing mineral added value but also towards building an industry that prioritises environmental sustainability and the welfare of communities around the operational area.
