Rosan: Prabowo Urges State-Owned Banks to Play a Role in Government Programmes

President Prabowo Subianto has instructed state-owned banks not to focus solely on profit. Prabowo believes the association of state-owned banks (Himbara) has a significant role to play in executing his government’s programmes. This stance was conveyed by Prabowo when he summoned the directors and commissioners of state-owned banks to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, 18 June 2026. Minister of Investment and Downstreaming, who is also CEO of Danantara, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, said the President gave a special message to them. According to Rosan, the total market capitalisation of all Himbara banks reaches approximately Rp 1,100 trillion. This figure, he said, represents about 10 percent of the value of all national companies. Rosan stated that Prabowo wants this potential to be utilised by Himbara for the wider community. The Gerindra Party Chairman does not want Himbara banks to be mere business entities. Rosan conveyed that state-owned banks also play a crucial role in supporting Prabowo’s government programmes. “He also illustrated how big the role of these government banks is in contributing to the success of government programmes, but also while still applying the precautionary principle,” he said after the meeting. “Banking should not solely pursue profit, but its presence must also be felt by the community, the people, in the form of providing equal opportunities to all levels, from MSMEs, commercial, to corporate,” Rosan stated. He said the presence of Himbara must truly be felt by all Indonesian people. Everyone, he said, must be given equal opportunities in accessing banking services. “Because again, Himbara banking has a very, very strategic role not only in financing but also in economic growth and future national policy,” Rosan said. State-owned banks frequently play a role in supporting government programmes, such as in the distribution of social assistance, people’s credit, and financing national strategic projects. During Prabowo Subianto’s administration, Himbara banks are also being asked to support his priority programmes such as the Merah Putih Village Cooperatives and the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) initiative.
