Jakarta (ANTARA) - Rorotan Subdistrict in Cilincing District, North Jakarta, is reducing waste production through a simultaneous waste sorting initiative across the area. “Thanks to collaboration from all parties, the volume of waste sent to the Rorotan RDF and the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) has been successfully reduced,” said Rorotan Subdistrict Head Ahmad Fitroh in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday. He explained that the initiative has managed to cut waste volume by 6.5 tonnes from the daily production of around 40 tonnes. According to him, waste issues cannot be solely shouldered by the government; public awareness is the key to creating a clean and healthy environment. “As waste producers, the community has the obligation to process and sort their own waste,” he said. All community elements, such as neighbourhood units (RT and RW), community empowerment bodies (LMK), family welfare groups (Dasawisma), health posts (Posyandu), and dengue control teams (Jumantik), have been involved in mass education efforts for residents. Ahmad noted that the increasing capacity strain at TPST Bantargebang serves as an alarm for all parties to change waste management practices from the source. Therefore, Rorotan Subdistrict, together with the North Jakarta Administrative City Environment Agency (Sudin Lingkungan Hidup), is intensifying education and providing supporting facilities for waste sorting in residential areas. Various facilities such as organic bins, drop points, composting sheds (losida), composters, and bioreactors have been prepared in RT and RW environments. Each RT even has two to four drop points to make it easier for residents to dispose of sorted organic waste from their homes. The collected organic waste is then transported to the 3R Waste Management Site (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to be processed into feed pulp for livestock such as maggots, chickens, and ducks. “So, waste is not directly discarded to RDF or Bantargebang, but is reused,” said Ahmad. Previously, the North Jakarta City Government (Pemkot) designated Rorotan Subdistrict in Cilincing District as a pilot project for independent waste sorting, ensuring that waste disposed of is more filtered. “We continue to encourage the optimisation of waste management through the pilot project for 100% waste sorting in Rorotan Subdistrict, Cilincing District,” said Assistant for Economy and Development of the North Jakarta Secretariat, Wawan Budi Rohman.
