Rolling Blackouts Hit Greater Jakarta, PLN Explains Cause

Rolling blackouts were reported across several areas on Friday (19/6/2026), including South Tangerang, Depok, and the University of Indonesia (UI) campus. Residents voiced complaints on social media, reporting power cuts lasting from morning until afternoon, with some outages exceeding three hours and disrupting daily activities.

State electricity company PT PLN (Persero) stated that the Java power system remains operational and under control, but that limited and measured load management was implemented in certain areas to maintain supply reliability. Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications and TJSL Gregorius Adi Trianto explained the measure was taken due to technical issues at power plants, with two major generating units experiencing disruptions and temporarily unable to operate, reducing the system’s supply capacity.

“PLN is working closely to accelerate recovery, optimise supply from other plants, and manage system operations to balance supply and demand while minimising the impact on customers,” Gregorius said in a written statement on Friday. He apologised for the inconvenience and said the load management is temporary and will be phased out as supply conditions improve.
