Rocky Gerung Attends Nadiem Makarim's Trial, Here's Why
Rocky Gerung stated, “I’m not here to support. I want to observe the trial from the perspective of legal reasoning,” when met at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Jalan Bungur Besar Raya on Monday (11/5/2026).
Observations by detikcom showed that Rocky was present from the start of the trial. He sat with other trial attendees.
Rocky appeared focused on following the trial proceedings. He even stayed in the courtroom until the panel of judges adjourned the session.
Rocky admitted that he also teaches legal reasoning. Therefore, he wanted to know whether the trial in Nadiem’s case was guided by pure legal logic or if there were defects, political influences, or ordered elements. “That’s essentially what I want to test,” he explained.
So, how does Rocky assess Nadiem’s trial? He believes the prosecutors failed to connect facts into evidence.
“I think the prosecutors are clever, but they are exhausted in connecting facts to become evidence. From evidence to charges, that’s where they failed, in my view. For example, how do they connect the concern that Mr Nadiem brought in a special team— isn’t that the function of the ministry?” Rocky said.
“Actually, if a minister sees that his ministry is incompetent, he brings in smart people. It’s straightforward, and it’s not criminal. So, the prosecutors, as I said earlier, are exhausted in turning WhatsApp chats into ‘what’s wrong’. That’s their failure,” he added.
