Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Trenggalek, Stefanus Triadi Atmono, said the closure of the main access was carried out again at around 04:30 WIB. ‘Indeed, this morning at Km 16 in Nglinggis Village, Tugu District, Trenggalek, we closed temporarily because there were rockfall materials falling. We did this for everyone’s safety,’ Triadi said, as quoted by detikJatim, Friday (22 May 2026). In addition to the landslide threat, thick fog reduced visibility for road users. The closure was implemented to minimise the risk of accidents. ‘We want everyone passing this route to be safe; we don’t want a truck struck by rocks again,’ he said. For now, access for two-wheeled and private vehicles is diverted via the lower alternative route. However, that route is not recommended for trucks carrying heavy loads or large vehicles. ‘At present we are coordinating to ensure smooth traffic flow from Ponorogo towards Trenggalek and vice versa. It is alternating because the lane is narrow,’ he added.
