Indonesia has become one of the first countries globally to implement Roblox’s age-based account system, effective 19 May 2026. The move introduces two new account categories — Roblox Kids and Roblox Select — specifically designed to protect users under the age of 16.

The policy follows a strategic meeting between Roblox management and Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid in April, reinforcing the platform’s compliance with Indonesia’s child protection regulations, particularly PP TUNAS.

Under the new system, players can no longer access all content anonymously. Global age-verification technology will automatically assign users to appropriate account types, ensuring curated content, communication features, and social interactions are strictly monitored.

Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman stated that Indonesia is leading in digital child protection. “We are proud to deliver a positive online space for millions of Indonesian players. This system ensures children only access age-appropriate content from the moment they start playing,” he said.

Local communities have also voiced support. Susi Sukaesih, founder of Sidina Community, said the initiative brings peace of mind to Indonesian mothers, with age-based controls and parental consent features helping guardians feel more involved and confident when supervising their children online.

To maintain content quality for children’s accounts, Roblox has implemented dynamic screening processes. Game creators and developers must undergo identity verification and pay a publication fee in Indonesian Rupiah (equivalent to 1,000 Robux) or subscribe to a premium service. Additionally, AI systems and human moderators will assess scenes in real-time to prevent sensitive content or risky free-drawing games for young users.

Beyond Indonesia, the system is currently being trialled in New Zealand, Australia, and the Netherlands ahead of a global rollout next month. (Z-1)

Meutya revealed that Roblox has approximately 45 million users in Indonesia, with an estimated 23 million under 16.

Roblox will automatically migrate around 23 million under-16 user accounts in Indonesia to the new age-based system.
