Robber's Excuse: Took Machete for 'Protection', Ends Up Slashing Mother and Child in Depok

Police have arrested a robber, identified as 28-year-old DR, who slashed a mother and her child with a machete in Sukamaju Baru, Depok. The suspect initially claimed he took the machete, which was on display in the house, for his own protection. Cimanggis Police Chief Kompol Jupriono stated on Friday (12/6/2026) that DR was still searching for other valuables when he entered a bedroom and discovered the victim was still awake. The victim screamed, and as DR was already holding the machete, he attacked. The commotion woke the victim’s mother, who tried to intervene but was also slashed by the suspect. After injuring both, DR fled with the victim’s mobile phone. The child sustained wounds to the cheek and head, while the mother suffered severe hand injuries, including a nearly severed finger. Both have since returned home after approximately three days of hospital treatment. The incident occurred on Monday (8/6) at around 1:00 a.m. local time on Jalan Raya Bogor Km 35, Sukamaju Baru, Tapos, Depok City. Police have named DR a suspect and are still pursuing his accomplice, identified as IY, who is believed to have participated in the violent theft. Both suspects are charged under Article 479, paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years.
