JAKARTA (JP): Central Jakarta Police shot dead one of four robbers near Senen Railway Station on Monday, a police officer said.
Police detectives chief Capt. Hendra Suhartiyono said an officer on patrol saw four men attempting to rob four women.
Hendra said the men were using sharp weapons to threaten the women, who were waiting for a bus to their hometown of Cilacap, Central Java.
"One of the thugs pointed a knife at Febriyanti's neck, but none of the women was injured during the holdup," Hendra added.
"When they saw Sgt. Maj. Selamet, one of the thugs tried to grab the victims' valuables while his friends fled."
He said the officer was forced to shoot the man after he tried to attack him with a sickle.
"Selamet shot the robber in his right thigh, but he continued to resist before being subdued after Selamet shot him in the chest."
Police took the man to Kramatjati Police Hospital in East Jakarta, but he died on the way. His body was admitted to the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital's morgue at 5:30 a.m.
"The police found a six-gram gold necklace and Rp 160,000 (US$23) in cash which he grabbed from the victims." Hendra added.
The chief of the Senen Police, Maj. Pratikno, previously warned people not to wear valuables when visiting the area, known for a high incidence of petty crimes. (06)
