Roads in East Jakarta Damaged by Utility Excavations and Natural Factors

East Jakarta — The East Jakarta City Government says a number of roads damaged in East Jakarta are caused by utility excavation projects and natural factors. Deputy Mayor Kusmanto emphasised that they will tighten supervision and handling of damaged roads. ‘There are utility excavations, there are natural causes, due to rain and heat. Regarding utility projects or repairs of holes, this is what we coordinate with the vendors,’ Kusmanto said when contacted via WhatsApp on Friday, 22 May 2026. ‘They are obliged to repair. We ask the Bina Marga to monitor the repairs. Do not let repairs that do not meet standards be left unfinished,’ Kusmanto said. There are 65 damaged road points in the Cakung sub-district, of which 55 have been handled by the Bina Marga Office’s sub-department. Meanwhile, in the Duren Sawit sub-district there are 117 damaged road points to be repaired. ‘That is why we need to coordinate with the kelurahan (village) and kecamatan (district) authorities at the city level. We are monitoring which ones are still in the excavation process and which ones have been completed,’ he said. One of the damaged roads is Jalan Dewi Sartika in East Jakarta. Satpel Bina Marga Kramat Jati, Dudy Supriyadi, said the road there had collapsed severely, up to 50 per cent. However, the case of the subsidence at that location is different because it was caused by former utility excavations. As a result, the repairs currently being carried out are still temporary, using compaction methods to keep the road safe for passage. ‘Yes, I have reported to Sudin that it is a consequence of the previous utilities. In other words, the repairs I am carrying out are temporary,’ Dudy said. The situation underscores the need for coordinated oversight across kelurahan, kecamatan, and city authorities to ensure safe, durable repairs.
