Road Subsidence in Lenteng Agung Remains Closed
The road section in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, could not be reopened as planned at 5:00 AM WIB following a recent subsidence. The Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub) has issued an apology and urged residents to use alternative routes.
“We apologise for the delay in reopening the road and advise the public to adjust their travel times and use the prepared alternative routes,” said the Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Budi Awaluddin, in Jakarta on Tuesday (2/6).
The subsidence in Lenteng Agung was caused by damage to an underground drainage system. Repairs to the drainage are still underway. Budi stated that the reopening of the road would be carried out in stages, with the lane adjacent to the railway tracks targeted to open at 8:00 AM WIB, followed by the other lane at 11:00 AM WIB. He explained that the road repair work requires more time.
According to information from the Jakarta Water Resources Agency (Dinas SDA), the delay in repairing the subsided road in Lenteng Agung was due to the process of closing and sterilising the area, which began at 2:00 PM WIB. Once the location was deemed safe and sterile, full repair work could only commence at 4:00 PM WIB.
“The safety of workers and road users is our top priority. Therefore, all stages of the work must be carried out according to procedure,” said Budi. He added that transportation agency officers have been deployed to the area to manage traffic and assist motorists in navigating alternative routes.
The South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-agency aims to complete the repairs to the subsided drainage in Lenteng Agung within two weeks, with an allocated budget of Rp380 million. Officers from the Jakarta Water Resources Agency installed new concrete box culverts in the water flow as part of the repairs on Thursday (28/5) night. The South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-agency noted that the three-metre-deep subsidence was triggered by damage to the underground drainage system. During the process, a debris truck belonging to the South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-agency also fell into the subsided hole.
