Road repairs

From Warta Kota

It has always been the case in Jakarta and surrounding areas
that when government officials appear, all roads they pass will
be in good condition and none will be in disrepair. The following
two cases may serve to illustrate this.

A road in Tangerang had been in very poor repair for many
months. It was not repaired until there were reports that Vice
President Megawati Soekarnoputri was going to pass that road.
Earlier many protests had been made to local public officials but
they fell on deaf ears.

A similar case occurred in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta. A road
had been in very poor condition for many months but, strangely,
on June 24 the road was repaired and paved with asphalt. How
could it be? It turned out that in connection with the 474th
anniversary of Jakarta, there was a planned celebration nearby
and the mayor of South Jakarta municipality was scheduled to
attend this celebration. No wonder the road was paved early in
the morning on the day when the mayor was slated to visit the
place.

As a good citizen, I'm curious why our public officials prefer
to serve their superiors rather than the thousands of local
residents who need their services every day. Local residents need
a good road every day, while high-ranking government officials
will only pass the road very briefly.
