Road Collapse in East Jakarta: Deep Hole at Bend Nearly Causes Riders to Fall

JAKARTA — A road collapse on Jalan Dewi Sartika in East Jakarta has gone viral on social media because the hole is located precisely on the left side of a bend. A video uploaded by the Instagram account @ijoeel shows a sufficiently deep hole deemed dangerous for drivers, especially those coming from Kalibata towards Jalan Dewi Sartika. In the video, the recorder is seen spraying white paint as a marker for the collapsed and potholed road on the left side. Several motorcyclists are even seen nearly falling into it while passing by. Additionally, several traffic cones are placed around the location as markers. Ricky, a local resident, said the hole has been there for about the past week. “I don’t know the cause, but it started small and grew that big because some vehicles got stuck in it,” said Ricky when met on Tuesday (14/4/2026). He added that the traffic flow at the location is often traversed by large vehicles such as trucks and buses, which are suspected to worsen the road condition. Ricky also mentioned that there has been no repair while the hole was still small, even though the Roads Department is said to have conducted an inspection some time ago. Another resident, Franky (30), hopes the road will be repaired soon to avoid endangering road users. “Just to make it safe, it should be done immediately because it was small at first but now it’s that big,” he said. “Maybe from digging. The hole is also new, about one to two weeks, but it’s getting bigger because of vehicles and water during rain,” he added. Meanwhile, Kompas.com has attempted to confirm with the Head of the East Jakarta Roads Sub-Department, Benhard Hutajulu, but has not received a response as of yet.
