Road accidents claim 80 lives

AMBON, Maluku: Road accidents in this province claimed 80 lives, injured 286 and caused material losses of up to Rp 94 million (US45,000) throughout 1994.

Maluku Police Chief Col. Muchaer said yesterday that in 1993, road accidents caused 67 fatalities, 310 injuries and Rp 92 million in material losses.

Drivers' negligence was to blame for 65 percent of last year's accidents, he said.

In the year-end evaluation of security in Maluku, Muchaer said the province was among the most stable among the 16 police commands.

Most crimes were "conventional" in nature, he told Antara, citing adultery, assault, rape and street brawls.(pan)
