Road Accidents and Conflicts Can Stem from Inadequate Driver Understanding
JAKARTA - Cases of road accidents and conflicts between road users have recently become increasingly common. From collisions caused by reckless driving to acts of arrogance on the roads, these incidents demonstrate that driving risks extend beyond mere driving ability.
Jusri Pulubuhu, founder of Jakarta Defensive Driving Consulting (JDDC), stated that many drivers still regard driving as requiring only technical skills. However, several other factors play a crucial role in determining road safety.
According to him, driving requires a complete combination of preparedness, not merely the ability to control a vehicle.
He explained that four main aspects that every driver must possess include skill, vigilance, discipline, and empathy towards other road users.
These parameters, in his view, must be understood by every person operating a vehicle in public spaces. Jusri believes many road incidents occur due to a loss of empathy and an increase in arrogant behaviour among drivers.
Furthermore, disorderly behaviour such as speeding and disregarding traffic regulations are also major causes of accidents. The combination of emotion, ego, and lack of risk awareness significantly increases the potential for collisions.
βAll these parameters always trigger accidents,β said Jusri.
For this reason, he emphasised that road safety must begin with a change in mindset, recognising that roads are shared spaces that demand social responsibility from every user.
