The discourse on banning vapes in Indonesia continues to gain momentum amid growing concerns over the misuse of electronic cigarettes as a means of consuming harmful substances. The proposal put forward by the Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Inspector General of Police Suyudi Ario Seto, is seen as a crucial step in addressing new patterns of narcotics distribution.

The Chairman of the PW Association of NU Pesantrens/RMI NU DKI Jakarta, KH Rakhmad Zailani Kiki, has voiced firm support for the proposal. He believes the state must not hesitate to implement strategic policies to shield the younger generation from increasingly complex threats.

“We, from the NU Pesantren Association or RMI-NU DKI Jakarta, fully support what has been stated by the Head of BNN. This is not merely a health issue but a serious threat to the future of the nation’s youth. And we will carry out socialisation and campaigns in pesantrens and study circles about the dangers of vapes,” he said in a written statement on Thursday (9/4/2026).

According to him, the misuse of vapes as a medium for consuming dangerous substances like etomidate is a worrying phenomenon. This method demonstrates that narcotics distribution is continually evolving by exploiting existing technological loopholes.

He stressed that the government needs to respond promptly to the situation with firm and measured policies. One important step is to tighten regulations, even opening the possibility of banning vapes if they are proven to be a gateway for drug abuse.

“If the device is already being misused, then the state must act. We must not be late, while the younger generation continues to become victims,” he said.
