The Front Pembela Islam (FPI) organisation has urged President Prabowo Subianto to publicly express condolences for the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Habib Hanif Alatas, secretary of the FPI’s Majelis Syura, said the request was an instruction from former FPI Grand Imam Habib Rizieq Shihab delivered through him.

He said this after attending a breaking of the fast with President Prabowo and a number of religious scholars, Islamic organisations, and leaders of pesantren at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta yesterday, 5 March 2026.

He argued that Iran is a friendly country to Indonesia and should therefore receive support, especially as it faces attacks on its sovereignty.

At the same occasion, the FPI also asked Indonesia to withdraw from the Board of Peace (BoP). Hanif said the request had been formally conveyed via a letter entrusted to one of the ministers to deliver to President Prabowo.

We have delivered the letter, entrusted to one of his ministers, and we have told the President that we still want Indonesia to withdraw from BoP. Not because we do not trust the President, but because we do not trust America, or Israel, he said.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Sugiono had publicly conveyed Indonesia’s condolences on the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the United States-Israel attack. The letter was delivered by Sugiono to Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi. “I conveyed a letter from President Prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian to convey Indonesia’s deepest condolences on the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official statement said on Wednesday.

On 28 February, the US and Israel launched a series of attacks against Iran. Iranian state television confirmed that the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the attack.
