Muhammad Kerry Andrianto Riza, son of suspect Riza Chalid, has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment by the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court on Friday (27 February). He was convicted of corruption involving crude oil and refinery product management during the 2018–2023 period.

“The court declares that the defendant Kerry has been proven beyond reasonable doubt to be guilty of committing corruption jointly as charged in the principal indictment,” said presiding judge Ajar Kusuma Aji during the verdict reading.

Kerry is deemed to have enriched himself by Rp2.9 trillion. His actions caused the state losses totalling Rp285.18 trillion.

According to the verdict, Kerry was the beneficial owner of PT Navigator Khatulistiwa, which was involved in arranging the lease of three vessels belonging to PT Jenggala Maritim Nusantara (JMN) and activities related to the lease of the Merak Fuel Terminal (TBBM).

In addition to the prison sentence, Kerry has been ordered to pay a fine of Rp1 billion within one month from the time the verdict acquires legal force, with a possible extension of one additional month. The court will seize Kerry’s assets should the fine remain unpaid.

Kerry must also pay restitution of Rp2.9 trillion, or face an additional five years’ imprisonment in default.

He was found to have violated Article 603 read together with Article 20 paragraph c of the National Criminal Code, read together with Article 18 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Corruption Offences as amended by Law Number 20 of 2021.

The court imposed a heavier sentence on the grounds that Kerry failed to support the government’s anti-corruption programme. Mitigating factors included that Kerry had no previous convictions and had family dependents.
