JAKARTA — A panel of judges has found that oil entrepreneur Mohamad Riza Chalid played a role in facilitating the lease of a fuel terminal that resulted in his son, Muhamad Kerry Adrianto Riza, receiving a prison sentence.

This became apparent when Judge Sigit Herman Binaji presented his legal considerations before delivering the verdict for Kerry and others in a corruption case involving the management of crude oil and refinery products at PT Pertamina Persero.

“In 2012, Mohamad Riza Chalid wished for PT Pertamina to lease the Merak fuel terminal and conveyed this to Hanung Budya Yuktyanta, Director of Marketing and Commerce at PT Pertamina, through his trusted representative Irawan,” said Judge Sigit during proceedings at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Friday (27 February 2026).

At that time, the Merak fuel terminal was still owned by a German company and did not belong to Kerry.

Subsequently, this requirement became the basis for a cooperation agreement between Pertamina and Kerry.

In March 2013, Irawan Prakoso met with Hanung and delivered a message from Riza Chalid.

“After that, Irawan Prakoso also conveyed to Hanung Budya that the plan to purchase storage tanks owned by Oiltanking Merak, which would be leased to PT Pertamina, was an order from Mohamad Riza Chalid, saying, ‘This is the boss’s order,’” the judge stated.

At that time, Kerry was just about to acquire the Merak fuel terminal.

Before this asset changed ownership, Kerry’s camp had already submitted a cooperation request.

Still in 2013, Irawan Prakoso met with Hanung Budya and Alfian Nasution, who held the position of Vice President of Supply and Distribution at PT Pertamina (Persero).

Following this warning, Hanung and Budya accelerated the cooperation process between Pertamina and Kerry’s company.

However, at that time, Pertamina had no urgent need to add fuel terminal capacity.

“Subsequently, the fuel lease plan was proposed by Hanung Budya Yuktyanta in Pertamina’s 2012-2016 Strategic Plan with a programme to increase storage capacity and fuel terminal facilities, ostensibly to achieve the goal of maintaining a strategic domestic market,” said Sigit.
